"As Environmentalists, We Need to Make “Ananda” Central to Our Lives," article from "Earth Island Journal"

http://www.earthisland.org/journal/index.php/elist/eListRead/as_environmentalists_we_need_to_make_ananda_central_to_our_lives/

From the article: "The author Madeleine L’Engle often interwove ideas about science, religion, and the arts into her science fiction books for children. But there’s a lot in there that’s good for actual grown-ups, too. In particular, she addressed a major theme in Hinduism, the idea of “ananda,” which she, most gracefully translates from the Sanskrit as: “Ananda: the joy without which the universe would cease to exist.”

"Nativescaping: Habitat Restoration, One Garden at A Time," article from "Earth Island Journal"

http://www.earthisland.org/journal/index.php/elist/eListRead/nativescaping_habitat_restoration_one_garden_at_a_time/

"Go wild in your garden.

Looking to heal our world? The first step is in your own backyard: One of the easiest ways to restore the wild is to prioritize native plants in your home garden.

Nowadays, the world is blanketed with buildings, roads, farms, factories and trash. So where do the wild things go? Answer: anywhere that feels like home, “home” defined as any functional habitat. That could mean your backyard, your front yard, on your rooftop, balcony, office, factory and in hedgerows and ditches on your farm.

Every ecosystem has a highly localized plant palette evolved over millennia to suit the local geology and hydrology. When we put these local native plants back into the landscape, we also make homes for the other creatures that depend upon them, including native bees, butterflies, amphibians, and reptiles."

"Book Review of "Rambunctious Garden: Saving Nature In A Post-Wild World,"" article from "Urban Coast: Journal of the Center for the Study of the Santa Monica Bay"

http://www.santamonicabay.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/2013_UrbanCoast_digital_FINversion2.pdf

"Rambunctious Garden: Saving Nature In A Post-Wild World" by author Emma Marris covers plenty of fascinating and important work by scientists from across the world, but she advocates on behalf of much of the work she describes, and many of the environmental ideas and practices presented with enthusiasm in this book have troubling implications. Ultimately, this book is worth a read to find out what the hot new ideas are, but definitely be prepared to keep your own counsel about the wisdom of all these new ideas and approaches.
