Our cultural habitat of adoring small predators, feeding them, protecting them, letting them roam free, has catastrophically skewed the predator / prey ratio,resulting in an ongoing slaughter of birds, especially birds in the nest and fledglings who are still learning to fly.
We are in danger of extirpating / or even making extinct entire populations of birds because of the high density of our domestic / feral cat population. Please note that belling cats does not solve the problem as they are geniuses at learning to work around the bells.
